Mini FISH Finish 3rd at the 2010 Mini Champs

Written by Coach Gunther

At the 8 - under Mini champs held in Olney, Maryland last weekend on March 13 - 14th, the Mini FISH finished in 3rd Place in the Combined Team Scores, scoring 978 points! The boys took second place and scored 556 points, the girls placed third with 422 points.  Congratulations!

It took the combined efforts of all of the Minis that participated to accomplish this. The FISH displayed a great team effort not only by swimming fast but also by cheering on their teammates.  The FISH showed great heart by winning several close races.  Every FISH swimmer at the meet posted at least one personal best time.

In her first Senior Championships, at the tender age of 10, Emily Meilus managed to place 19th out of 61 entrants in the Girls 200 backstroke.  After swimming prelims in the morning, then attending her regular Sunday practice, Emily still managed to split her best time for the 100 back in the finals that evening, and drop even more time overall.  I guess that toughness pays off!

With Kate Ziegler and Adam Pennington leading the way with 5 individual first place finishes each, the FISH captured 11 of the 28 individual events at the 2010 PVS Senior Championships.  Quite an amazing accomplishment considering our entire entry consisted of 6 guys and 6 girls!

Way to go, Kate, Adam, and Brian!

  Congratulations, entire group!

Emily Meilus won the 10 and under Girls High Point Trophy at the recently concluded 2010 Retriever Classic, and Kate Ziegler captured the Open Girls High Point Trophy.

Emily Meilus' 1:04.88 for the 100 yard backstroke broke the 10 & under girls Resident Potomac Valley 100 backstroke record.  That is also the fastest time in the country for that event this year.  Wow, Emily!

The Minnesota Grand Prix was a great experience and I was very lucky to have the chance to go on the trip.  The Fish team and I got to bond so much on this trip and I had a blast!  Before the meet began, we went to Mall of America where we got to ride the indoor rides, shop at the huge number of stores it had, and eat and talk with our team.  Some famous Olympians were at the meet, including our teammate, Kate Ziegler, Rebecca Soni, and super cute Ryan Lochte.  We got to talk to the Olympians, took pictures with them, and some kids even got their autographs.  In between sessions, each team had some extra time to chat with their teammates and bond some more when we went to get food.  The meet was fun and although not everyone received best times, it was a chance for all of our team to become closer.

isabella_zones.jpgFISH swimmer Isabella Rongione made quite a splash when she swam the 500 freestyle Thursday night at Zones in New York.  Seeded 11th with a time of 5:59.63, Isabella finished 2nd overall with a time of 5:54.96 improving her personal best time by 5 seconds which at the same time makes her the fastest 9-year old swimmer in the US. Needless to say, we are all very excited for our 9-year old FISH and again, all the hard work is paying off. Go Isabella, go FISH!
