L. A Season Cut Short -Spring 2003

Kate's spring season was highlighted by her freshman year performance at Metros, the championship meet or her high school, Bishop Denis J. O'Connell. In what would become an annual tradition of spectacularly fast swimming, Kate won both her events.

                                                200y Free                  1:51.59

                                                500y Free                  4:47.78

These were both best times, the 200 free by nearly a full second, and the 500 free by 3. Her performance in the 500 free broke a 15-year old meet record.

Based off these swims, Kate had every expectation of finishing her short course season with even faster times - PVS Senior Champs, PVS Junior Olympics and Senior Nationals had even more appeal, since it was being held in Indianapolis - traditionally the sight of all Olympic Trials (until 2004). For anyone really into the history of swimming - the names of all the team members who qualified for the Olympics are inscribed on the south wall of the Natatorium.

Talk about unfortunate breaks- Kate broke a bone in her left foot, and a toe on her right foot- jumping into warm-ups for PVS Senior Champs.

The rest of the spring was spent swimming with a fiberglass cast... with floaties to support her foot... flipping at the flags.
