I. On to Nationals - Minnaw-so-tuh

Leading up to her first Senior Nationals, Kate spent the early months of 2002 improving almost all her events, while also trying to qualify for a couple more.

Her second Senior Nationals cut came in in1000 Free, 10:00.90, at the Retriever Classic at UMBC in mid - January. Traditionally, this has always been a very good meet for Kate, a true test of the speed and conditioning gained from the daily doubles during our annual training trip over winter break. Faced with 19 swims (10 events over 4 days, with finals in all of them, except for the 1000 Free), Kate responded with 10 best times.

Kate´s short course season ended in style, capturing the 13-14 Girl´s High Point at the PVS Junior Olympics.

What can be accomplished in 3 months?

On to Nationals... Minnaw-so-tuh..as Kate would say. ...Or so we thought. Unfortunately, something happened during Eastern Zone Sectionals.

Saturday, March 16, 2002- Too sick with the flu to swim relays, Kate spent the last two days of the meet trying to recover, some real `quality` time, I `m sure

Monday, March 18, 2002 - Not given the opportunity to change our reservations to a flight a couple days later, I met Kate at the airport, nearly passed out on the floor, too weak to move, with chills and a fever. Somehow we made it to Minnesota.

Tuesday, March 19, 2002 - Even after another 24 hours to recover, and countless trips to the drugstore we had no choice but to scratch the 800.
