F. Summer's End 2001

Summer in the Awesome FISH means swimming outdoors in Reston, doubles, the annual beach trip, travel meets and much more.

Part of the much more is the PVS Senior champs. Held at the University of Maryland in Mid-July, this was the meet Kate finally achieved her Zone qualifying times in the 800 and 1500 meters Freestyle. Her 6 events for the Zones now included all of the freestyle events, from the 50 free to the 1500 Free, quite a versatile range.

Senior Champs was memorable in many respects, not the least being, the dramatic improvement for Kate since the beginning of the Summer. Remember the first time Kate swam the 1500, in Lancaster, in the beginning of June? (19:29.68) Senior Champs, Mid- July- 18:02.96 ! Remember how Kate had finally gotten the Zone cut in the 400 at the NBAC meet in June ( 4:50.68) Senior champs, Mid -July 4:37.67 in prelims, 4:35.22 in finals!

Seeded among the top three in each of the distance events for Zones, Kate headed off for Buffalo with her usual goal in mind:

1)      Enjoy the meet, and gain as much experience as possible.

2)      Swim the best she could.

3)      Try for best times

4)      Try to qualify for the next level!

These goals, even though the might sound very simple, are typical Kate; the haven“t changed over the years and I hope they never do. In this case the next level Kate was trying for was the U.S. Open.

After the race was swum, Kate had personal bests in two of her events
