October 2010 Archives

Published by American Swimming Coaches Association, John Lennard, Parent Coach and Athlete

We interviewed a former age group national record holder who is now in her 20's.  She set a national age group record in the 9-10 age group.  When she turned 11 she joined a group of excellent nationally ranked 11-12 year old girls.  She continued to improve but struggled emotionally and was not happy.

Just before turning 13 her mom and dad decided she needed to be swimming in a different environment with a nationally prominent team and moved the mom and her to a new team out of state while the dad stayed behind.

Dear FISH Parents --

I'm glad to see a number of FISH officials have signed up for some of the training clinics to be held in Herndon during the Harvest Moon Meet (9-10 October 2010). If you have not signed up yet and if you can, please take advantage of this opportunity. Several clinics are offered at this meet, including Stroke and Turn, Starter, CTS, and Hy-Tek. These sessions are great for re-certification or new certification. If you are already a certified official, please consider working toward additional certifications and bring a friend! These clinics are convenient because they coincide with a meet that our team is attending and it's relatively close to home for many of us. The Harvest Moon Invitational Meet is a great developmental meet with several positions still open for officials. This is a great meet for new as well as experienced officials to kick off the season. Here is the link to the meet announcement: http://www.pvswim.org/1011meet/11-06-ma.pdf. Please contact the meet referee, Jim Thompson (jimthompson5802@aol.com) directly with questions or to let him know of your availability in advance.

Continuing Education and Recruiting

Please note that continuing education is a key component to all National level certification and LSC recertification. Please be sure to stay current with your continuing education requirements. Several officials' clinics are scheduled over the course of the next few months and they are listed on the PVS web site. As I mentioned before, we can also request an instructor to come to one of our team's training sites to hold a clinic at a time convenient for us. So, please let me know if you think that would be helpful.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

See you on deck,
