A question that comes up often is what swimmers should do about their nutrition during the off-season. I have a lot of swim parents ask me about the downside of their athlete eating "like a swimmer" in the couple of weeks they're out of the water, and even more often, I see parents trying to limit what their children are eating because they're afraid of them putting on weight while not training. This is an important subject, not just from a swimming standpoint, but from a simple health aspect, as well, so I wanted to cover it this month.

The athlete who most epitomizes our summer
swim program this year is Megan McCreary. There were several swimmers that were
offered the option to raise their intensity and commitment by coming to more
practices offered by our summer program - she took it to heart and maximized
every opportunity available. Megan had great practice attendance, continually
took advantage of the evening practices, and always worked hard while at
practice.
The PVS Long Course Champs presented many challenges to the FISH swimmers. These challenges included dealing with an unexpected change of the meet venue and format, swimming under pressure, not having a cool down lane and dealing with the summer heat. However, the FISH swimmers were able to handle these difficulties with great success.
On day one of the meet, problems with the Fairland pool's
pump forced the meet venue to be changed.
The format of the meet went from prelims/finals to only timed finals.
Fortunately, PVS was able to secure the use of another 50-meter pool, the
Audrey Moore pool at Wakefield. Although not an ideal venue, the meet was able to continue.
The change in pool and format actually provided a great learning experience for
the swimmers on how to handle adversity while staying focused on what they were
able to control, their own races.
