June 2010 Archives

This month's FISH is Madelyn Donohoe. She is a quietly furious 8 year old swimmer who is turning heads with the way that she trains.

Her big leap came at her first long course practice at George Mason where we were doing test sets, and Madelyn found a new strength in herself  recognizing that it is okay for it to hurt a bit when swimming.  Realizing such "wisdom" at such a tender age, shows us that her work ethic is phenomenal.

David Pursley - FISH Age Group Coach

Coach David joins The FISH from a long line of swimmers and coaches in his family.  His father is the head coach of British Swimming, his mother was a long time age group coach with two of his aunts, and his brother currently coaches at Arizona State University. His family's passion for swimming was instilled in him at a very young age and he has always appreciated what the sport has done for him.

How many times have you come to swim meet and saw total chaos in the pool with well over a hundred swimmers attempting to swim? For as much chaos that you see, almost every single swimmer is doing something specific to warm-up for the meet. If they swim backstroke, they might focus on a turn and knowing the feel of the wall or how to place their feet on the wall for a start.

Coaches and athletes use the saying "getting a feel for the water" in regards to how much water they can push to go fast. Each athlete is unique in the way they warm-up and try to feel the water, we as coaches try to best accommodate everyone with the pool space allowed.
If you are interested in refining your already legal strokes, it is time to sign up for our very popular FISH stroke clinics offered in Reston at Hunters Woods and in Annandale at the Wakefield/Audrey Moore RECenter.

It is simple, just download the registration form and send it to Monika Paris (Team Manager: mparis@pvfish.org).  Please send in full payment along with your registration form.  The check needs to be payable to the FISH.

Registrations will be accepted on a first come first served basis.

Brooke Ream has been a member of The FISH for the better part of 9 years, starting off in Advanced Age Group and progressing all the way to Awesome Fish.  Brooke has made it this far with a goal-oriented attitude, a strong work ethic, and a desire to improve both as a person and an athlete.

Brooke will be attending The University of Virginia in the fall, and she feels that her time spent with the FISH has prepared her for the rigorous academics that lay ahead in Charlottesville.  Although Brooke will not continue her swimming career at Virginia, she is looking forward to meeting new people and trying new things in college.

The FISH would like to thank all visiting coaches, parents and athletes for making the 2010 FISH June Invite a fast and fun competition. We would also like to thank all our officials and  volunteers for working hard to provide a great opportunity for all our attending athletes. GREAT JOB!

Claire Wolff is May's FISH of the Month.  At the 2010 FISH Derby, Claire's performances caught the attention of the FISH coaching staff and teammates.  Claire has been making steady improvements all season, but the FISH Derby was a breakthrough meet for her.

Claire achieved Eastern Zone qualifying times for the first time in her swimming career.  "Making the Zones team is something I have been trying to do forever!" Claire expressed when told of her achievement.

The Maryland State Champs were held at the MAC swim center in Maryland last weekend.  Twenty three FISH swimmers participated and swam spectacular at the meet. The FISH swam so well, setting many personal best times.  Along the way, swimmers qualified for more Age Group Champs and Zone events.

In addition, the FISH finish 4th overall with only 23 swimmers participating in the meet and swimming only 5 relays!

In addition, FISH swimmers broke 7 meet records!
