A Dream and a Goal

At the start of the season Ben Sharrer was an extremely raw but talented swimmer.  Through the course of the season he continually made adjustments to his stroke and was committed to coming to practice.  By Christmas Championships he had made his Junior Olympic cut in the 50 fly, which was his goal at the start of the season.  However, as the season progressed he set his sights a bit higher.  After receiving a note about the Showcase Classic that the FISH might be able to attend, Ben decided that he wanted to be one of those swimmers.

Congratulations FISH swimmers!!

Please note: A psych sheet and timeline for the meet have been posted on the PVS website. While individual entries are correct, FISH relays on the posted psych sheet are not. Please disregard relay names on the posted psych sheet and use the file posted above.
There have been a lot of outstanding swims by the FISH team over the past three days at the Junior Olympics. A full report of the meet is available above. Saturday night's race in the Girls 10 & Under 200 Yard Free was for the record books - literally.

Mini FISH Finish 3rd at the 2010 Mini Champs

Written by Coach Gunther

At the 8 - under Mini champs held in Olney, Maryland last weekend on March 13 - 14th, the Mini FISH finished in 3rd Place in the Combined Team Scores, scoring 978 points! The boys took second place and scored 556 points, the girls placed third with 422 points.  Congratulations!

It took the combined efforts of all of the Minis that participated to accomplish this. The FISH displayed a great team effort not only by swimming fast but also by cheering on their teammates.  The FISH showed great heart by winning several close races.  Every FISH swimmer at the meet posted at least one personal best time.

FISH Swimmers and FISH Parents,

We hope to see you all at Fuddruckers on Friday, March 19th right after practice at 6:15 PM.  The restaurant is located on 1587 Spring Hill Road, Tysons Corner (five minutes from Spring Hill RECenter.)

Please be there and get to know each other "outside" the water.

If you cannot be part of this fun outing, but would like to purchase raffle tickets, one ticket per dollar or six tickets for five dollars, please contact Monika Paris, or simply check out the bulletin board at Spring Hill for instructions.

Hope to see you all Friday night.

Team Manager, Monika Paris

Swim-A-Thon

Swim-A-Thon packets were distributed last week - check your swimmer's folder.  All swimmers received one packet.  All envelopes must be returned.  Please read through the information, and let me know if you have any questions or can help with the after swimming party.

***BONUS***BONUS***BONUS***

If you make or exceed your fund raising goal and return your envelope BEFORE the Swim-A-Thon, your name will be entered into a drawing for a free 30 minute swim lesson!  Coaches Josh Morgan, Josh Hyde, and Gunther have all donated 30 minute lessons.  Envelopes with donations may be returned anytime (the sooner the better) to the Swim-A-Thon folder in the box poolside.

Thanks to everyone for your support during this important fundraiser!

The Fish continues its strong season  by winning the High Point trophies at last weekend's Senior Champs!  Congratulations!!

  • Kate Ziegler won High Point for Girls, and
  • Adam Pennington won High Point for Boys, with Brian Via runner-up!!

Written by Coach Ray

In her first Senior Championships, at the tender age of 10, Emily Meilus managed to place 19th out of 61 entrants in the Girls 200 backstroke.  After swimming prelims in the morning, then attending her regular Sunday practice, Emily still managed to split her best time for the 100 back in the finals that evening, and drop even more time overall.  I guess that toughness pays off!

With Kate Ziegler and Adam Pennington leading the way with 5 individual first place finishes each, the FISH captured 11 of the 28 individual events at the 2010 PVS Senior Championships.  Quite an amazing accomplishment considering our entire entry consisted of 6 guys and 6 girls!

Way to go, Kate, Adam, and Brian!

  Congratulations, entire group!

PVS has made changes to the 14 & Under Junior Olympics timeline due to an extraordinary number of entries. Please click the link below to make sure you are up to date with the latest information.
Thank you all for attending this morning's pep rally.  All who came had fun and are pumped up for next weekend's JUNIOR OLYMPICS!

With the Championship season upon us, I figured an article about taper and what it all entails would prove appropriate for this week's Coach's Corner. Therefore, I have provided a link to the American Swim Coaches Association webpage which will take you to an article that explains a number of things. First it tells you exactly what taper is, and then explains how a swimmer can make sure they are doing everything possible to ensure that they reach maximum performance for the upcoming championship meet.

Read the article carefully and be sure to share it with the whole family as everyone is equally important in the success of our athletes.

What a great weekend for the FISH from all angles! Michael Bailey (50 fly), Michael Bennett (50 free), Haley Bergthold (50 back), Alexandra Cramer (200 fly), Matthew Herbert (50 free) and Michael Ratcliffe (400IM) all swam their first Junior Olympic qualifying times. In addition to the slew of personal best swims, FISH athletes were able to add 21 individual swims to our 2010 JO entry. Great job!

Each spring, USA Swimming hosts four Zone Select Camps across the country. This year, FISH Team Manager Monika Paris has been selected by USA Swimming to serve as the Head Manager for the Western Zone Camp in Tempe, Arizona on May 27-30. Being selected is a testament to Monika's organizational skills, caring demeanor and business knowledge. We are lucky to have her with the FISH!
