In a recent article, Kristin Fusco, outlines 9 steps to increase your energy through better eating.  The advice she offers will help you train harder, longer and recover quickly.  Naturally this will result in faster swimming.

9 Steps for Increasing Energy through Food

Word of Grant's (10 years old) recent success in making his JO cuts reached out to the West Coast this morning.  His Uncle Mike works for the University of California at Berkeley and ran into members of the Cal swim team having breakfast.  Check out the sign.  We have bi-coastal support for the FISH and for this particular FISH!

Last weekend, the Mini FISH participated at the Mini Gator Meet. The FISH swam very well at the meet.  Personal best times were recorded by all 26 of our swimmers.   The Mini FISH showed excellent improvement in the racing skills, disqualifications were minimal for this meet.  We will continue to focus on improving our starts, turns, and finishes during Mini practices.

Highlights from the meet included: John Bradshaw placed 1st in 3 races. Dereck Charles placed 2nd in 3 events and recorded "B" times. Jillian Johnson took first in the 25 freestyle. Daniel Li recorded a "B" time and placed first in the 50 back.  Phillip Pan placed 2nd in two events. Nick Spicer achieved his first "BB" time at the meet in the 50 backstroke.

Despite the week long "snowpocalyse" interruption to all our schedules, FISH athletes had some impressive performances at an interesting and exciting President's Day Meet in Manassas.

During Friday evenings marathon session, Grace Gent and Joanne Fu each raced the 200y freestyle twice in a 10 minutes span thanks to a error with the starting system. Both young ladies "left it all in the pool" (if you know Grace, ask her about her finish!) and managed to place 1st and 2nd in their age group. After a 20 minute clean up break, the meet resumed action and 10 year old Emily Meilus won the Open Women's 200y backstroke with an impressive 2:16.50 in only her second time competing in the event. That time currently ranks 3rd for 12 & Under girls in the PVS LSC.

Chris Murphy had a great weekend, swimming 100% personal best times. Chris' times from the weekend in the 100 Free (53.42), 500 Free (5:13.22), 50 Fly (27.15) and 100 IM (1:02.74) are all #1 rankings for 11-12 boys in PVS LSC.

The FISH contingent of 10 & Under girls continued to impress with many best times throughout the weekend, including a 1st - 5th sweep of the 50 butterfly! Isabella Rongione, Joanne Fu, Emily Meilus, Michelle Owens and Grace Gent dominated the field with their lifetime best butterfly times: 29.76, 30.61, 32.12, 33.51 and 33.97.

Keep swimming hard, FISH!

2010 has been a great year so far for Emily! In route to winning the girls 10 & Under high point award at the RAC Classic over MLK weekend, Emily won the 200 free, 50 back and 100 back and teamed with her fellow 10 & Under FISH to win both the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays. Emily's 100 backstroke time of 1:04.88 bettered the PVS Resident Record and is currently the top in the nation for her age group. Emily had three other swims at the RAC meet that earned her national rankings: 200 free, 2:08.42 (8th), 50 back, 31.11 (11th) and 500 free, 5:42.54 (11th).

Adam Pennington has been a member of the FISH swim team for a long time, starting as a Mini FISH and progressing all the way up to the Awesome FISH. He reached this level through hard work and a dedication to the sport of swimming that has helped him become one of the top swimmers throughout PVS.

Next year,  Adam will be attending Columbia University in New York City. He is looking forward to his time in the "Big Apple" and is excited about the new challenges that lie ahead both in school and in the water.

Please join us in wishing him well in all his future endeavors, and read on to get to know a little more about his experience with The FISH.

Good Luck Adam!

This week in the coach's corner we are taking a break from all the technical advice we've been going over in the previous installments to watch some outstanding swimming. This video was sent to me by an old friend and I thought it was quite relevant given our previous breaststroke videos, and our constant attention to developing the underwater kick.

This video shows a couple of things. First, is the current world record holder in the 100 breaststroke, Leisel Jones. She is a phenomenal swimmer and this video really demonstrates what years of hard work and attention to detail can help you accomplish.

The second portion of the video is really the part that I would like you to pay attention to. This is just a fun video that provides a great illustration of what an underwater kick can really accomplish. Of course, what this athlete does in this video is illegal and resulted in a disqualification; however, he completely blows away the field without taking ONE stroke! This is why all your coach's are so set on developing your underwater kicking. If you develop this skill, it can be a huge advantage for you in your races.

Until next time, be sure to throw in an extra underwater kick off all your walls at your next practice.
