April 2009 Archives

Jessica.jpg

When Jessica Rogers, 12, joined FISH this season, she was an unknown to the Potomac Valley Swim leagues, but had already made her mark on the junior national scene as a record holder in 7 swimming events.

Born with a condition called lumbo-sacral agenesis, Jessica weighs in at just under 35 lbs and is missing the lower part of her spine as well as most of both legs. Nevertheless, Jessica has always been an athlete. She plays wheelchair basketball (team ranked 1st in the Eastern region), participates in wheelchair track (taking 1st place at the 2008 junior nationals in the 100Meter 200Meter 400Meter events), and she swims.

Please staple a check, made out to the FISH to the order form. and Please make sure to include the swimmer's name on the check as well as on the order form, to ensure that the items ordered are delivered to the appropriate family.  If you have additional questions, please contact our Spirit Wear Coordinator, Kris Delta at kndelta@yahoo.com.  She will be placing your order and once the order gets in, she will contact you and arrange for pick up.

Thank you,

Coach Julie

For over four years I watched my daughter swim under the direction of other coaches. I have also watched her at basketball practice and games, and dance, and figure skating.  I know the joy of watching her in these activities.  I also know and understand the overwhelming desire to direct, correct, encourage, and sometimes scold my child at practice.  But those are not proper parental behaviors once I have released her into the care of a coach or teacher.  As a parent, am not to interfere with the practice or attempt to talk to my child during the practice session.

isabella_zones.jpgFISH swimmer Isabella Rongione made quite a splash when she swam the 500 freestyle Thursday night at Zones in New York.  Seeded 11th with a time of 5:59.63, Isabella finished 2nd overall with a time of 5:54.96 improving her personal best time by 5 seconds which at the same time makes her the fastest 9-year old swimmer in the US. Needless to say, we are all very excited for our 9-year old FISH and again, all the hard work is paying off. Go Isabella, go FISH!

Please follow the link below to view the best times that were swum by our FISH swimmers at the Spring Champs last weekend.  The swimmer had a fantastic time and enjoyed the "treats" after swimming best times.  There were a lot of improvements and the kids dropped time in many events at the last short course meet of the season.
